Songwriting for Electronic Musicians with Cândida Borges: Masterclass + Open House

Some of the biggest songs are collaborations between a songwriter and a producer. But it isn’t always easy for these two people to communicate their ideas. In this masterclass songwriter, vocalist, and producer Cândida Borges will take a deeper look at what is required for a songwriter and producer to build a musical relationship and meaningful collaborations. She will also break down the various elements that make up a song, from the original emotion and idea, to melody + topline, lyrics, chords + harmony, to arranging these ideas to form a complete song.

Cândida Borges is one of New York City’s most sought-after singer songwriters and music educators. Classically trained, she holds multiple music degrees and teaches in universities around the world.  She is equally versed in her native Brazilian roots, as she is in contemporary music, jazz, and electronic styles. As an artist Cândida’s signature vocal sound can be heard on recordings such as “Girar O Mundo” (Pattern Drama), while her work as a producer and song-writer has been featured in film scores, theater productions, and art installations, as seen on her website. An Evening with Andrew Huang (SOLD OUT)

Andrew Huang.png

Andrew Huang is a Toronto-based music and video producer with a penchant for working within absurd, self-imposed limitations.

A versatile and prolific musician, he has released over 2,000 songs in a massive range of genres. He is perhaps best known for the strange feats of musicianship which have earned him over 1.6 million subscribers and 190 million views on his YouTube channel: He has rapped 300 words in a minute, composed a classical piece in the shape of a unicorn head, and covered numerous pop songs using only the sounds of items mentioned in the lyrics - for instance, "99 Red Balloons" played on red balloons. In addition, his content runs the gamut from music education to equipment reviews to interactive projects with his fans.

No Livestream tonight unfortunately, but we will be filming the event, and will be posting the masterclass on YouTube so check back soon!

WE ARE SOLD OUT, but we kept 5 tickets to give away on the day of the event. If you want to be considered for a free ticket, please enter your email address below and you will be notified on the day of the event.

Ableton Tips - How to produce your first track, with Max Wild + Open House

Open House (6 pm - 7 pm)

Masterclass (7 pm - 9 pm)

Producer, songwriter, and 343 Labs founder Max Wild breaks down into simple steps the process of producing a track in Ableton Live. With his extensive music theory and songwriting knowledge Max will demonstrate how the basic use of some of Ableton’s powerful tools can make producing a track easier than you think.

Max has been teaching music for over 15 years. A former instructor at Dubspot, you are as likely to find him playing the saxophone next to a DJ as you are to find him leading the Ableton User Groups in New York. His degrees from renowned conservatories in London and NY didn’t stop him from following his real passion: Helping people channel their creativity to make music - aka teaching how to produce great music.

The Creative Process, with Abe Duque

Does music making always need to be inspired, or can the creative process be practiced, like any other skill? This is the ongoing discussion most creators have with themselves on a daily basis. In this masterclass, techno legend, producer, DJ, and longtime Dubspot instructor Abe Duque shares his creative process to making music, and attempts to demystify some of the preconceptions about making music, taking a song from the very beginnings of an idea, through its various stages of development until it reaches its final version.

With a career that started in the early days of house and techno at New York’s notorious Limelight, Abe Duque has been releasing tracks since the early 90s, on labels such as International Deejay Gigolo, Tension, Abuse Industries, and Rapture, as well as remixing tracks for household names such as Chemical Brothers and Pet Shop Boys, Abe later turned his attention to education, where he is now considered one of the most respected educators in his field.

John Selway presents: "Techno Fundamentals, Part 1"

John Selway has literally blazed every path, collaborated with every talent, played everywhere, mastered every style, broken every boundary, risen to techno stardom and never forgotten his roots. Since taking up electronic dance music from his home base in NYC in the early ’90s, John has faithfully represented his town at every turn. As an artist, a record slinger, a label owner and more, he is a musical force to be reckoned with and a bonafide pillar of the scene.

In this first installment of Techno Fundamentals, Selway breaks down the basic elements of the Techno sound. He dives into the history of how Techno was made in its inception, using hardware drum machines, and demonstrates how to recreate this sound in Ableton Live, using native plugins, to create sonically rich soundscapes and rhythmically complex grooves.
